PageRank (PR) is a numeric value that represents the importance of a web page in the internet. Google understands that when a web page links another is like a vote for it. As many votes gets a web page, Google will consider it better. Also, the important the first web page is, the most valued the vote will be. This way, Google calculates the importance of a web page thanks to the votes it recieves, having in mind also the importance of the web page that gives the vote. PageRank ( developed by founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin ) is the way Google has to decide the importance of a webpage. It is a valuable data, because it is one of the factors that determine the position that a web page is going to reach in the search results. It is not the only factor that Google uses for clasifying web pages, but it is one of the most importants. It is important to have in mind that not all the links are relevant fot Google. For example, Google filters and discards the links in web pages which just have lots of links (called 'link farms'). Google, admits that a web page cannot control the links that point to it, but it can control the links that point to other sites from it. That's why outer links pointing to a web page cannot harm it, but links pointin to a web page which has been banned may be bad for its PageRank. The 'PageRank™' algorithm was patented in the United States on January 8th 1998, by Larry Page. The original title was 'Method for node ranking in a linked database', and the patent number assigned was 6,285,999.
